Qube Money Expert Series With Jason From Royal Council Life And Finance Coaching

Recently we sat down with Jason Kocherhans from Royal Council Life and Finance Coaching to chat about all things budgeting. Jason has a passion for incorporating life coaching into financial coaching. Up until recently, Jason worked for another budgeting software, Mvelopes. Sadly, Mvelopes recently announced that they are leaving the digital budgeting space. Jason sat down to chat with us about the importance of budgeting, education, setting goals, and using an app intentionally to further your life and financial goals.

When we sat down to chat, Jason made sure to emphasize the important distinction between financial coaching and his own line of work.

“Finances are a huge part of life”, he stressed. “So as we’re talking about the tactical parts of managing finances, we have to consider the reason we do it. It’s important to have a clear vision of where you’re wanting to go, and then align your finances around those goals. That’s why we call it life and finance coaching. The title “financial coach” doesn’t properly describe what I actually do.”

Jason went on to emphasize how important it is to incorporate education into budgeting.

“Typically an app isn’t the whole solution,” he stated. “You usually need to incorporate some type of mentorship. I find that a lot of people simply don’t have good teachers, and they’re trying all of these budgeting tools out with no one to keep them accountable and answer their questions. Even with the best apps, sometimes you get unmotivated.”

He went on to say, “organizing your finances is a big deal, and a lot of people just want to turn on the blinders and not look at it until it becomes a major problem.”

Credit card debt has been increasing in the United States, leaving a lot of Americans feeling burdened, ashamed, and clueless as to how they are going to tackle it. “There’s a growing disconnection with our spending,” Jason says. “Our culture is permeated with credit cards and guides on how to play the game. It seems like most of the conversations around credit cards are about which cards have the highest rewards. We’ve forgotten that the majority of people are losing this game. For every point you’re getting, you’re probably spending double just to earn those points. But we have the justification of the free trip or the cash back at the end of the year. We’re overspending and paying more in interest.”

“We aren’t a no-debt shop at Royal Council. There are definitely ways to utilize debt to accomplish your goals,” he reminded us. “But the way people are using debt is not strategic at all. We’ve got to get these credit cards out of our lives and start focusing on how we are going to intentionally organize our finances.”

Speaking on the closure of Mvelopes, Jason revealed, “we have a lot of displaced users that are frustrated, but they’re out there searching for an alternative budgeting app. We’re trying to transition our users from one app to another, and that’s where we’ve started to incorporate Qube into our coaching.”

“What I love about Qube is that it involves the whole household. Everyone has their own qubes to manage and stay accountable for. This feature is great for teaching kids about budgeting. They get to see what is spent on them, and it teaches them a lot of responsibility. My five-year-old loves to sit and talk about budgeting now since I’ve made it simple and understandable for her.”

Jason concluded our conversation with some encouraging words about budgeting. “Most people think budgeting is super limiting. What you actually want and need is a good system and principles that will open up your options so you can weigh them properly. You want to engage and know where your finances are at. This will allow you to make plans and accomplish your life goals. All it takes is good financial management, organization, and utilization of the proper tools.”
